VLSI PROJECTS ABSTRACT 2016-2017 A LOW-COST HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE FOR ILLUMINATION ADJUSTMENT IN REAL TIME APPLICATIONS ABSTRACT For real-time surveillance and safety applications in intelligent transportation systems, high-speed processing for image enhancement is necessary and must be considered. In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient illumination adjustment algorithm that is suitable for low-cost very large scale integration implementation. Experimental results show that the proposed method requires the least number of operations and achieves comparable visual quality as compared with previous techniques. To further meet the requirement of real-time image/video applications, the 16-stage pipelined hardware architecture of our method is implemented as an intellectual property core. Our design yields a processing rate of about 200 MHz by using TSMC 0.13-µm technology. Since it can process one pixel per clock cycle, for an image with a resolution of QSXGA (2560 × 2048), it requires about 27 ms to process one frame that is suitable for real-time applications. In some low-cost intelligent imaging systems, the processing rate can be slowed down, and our hardware core can run at very low power consumption.
POWER ELECTRONICS ABSTRACT 2016-2017 HIGH STEP-UP/STEP-DOWN SOFT-SWITCHING BIDIRECTIONAL DC-DC CONVERTER WITH COUPLED-INDUCTOR AND VOLTAGE MATCHING CONTROL FOR ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS ABSTRACT: A soft-switching bidirectional DC-DC converter (BDC) with a coupled-inductor and a voltage doubler cell is proposed for high step-up/step-down voltage conversion applications. A dual-active half-bridge (DAHB) converter is integrated into a conventional buck-boost BDC to extend the voltage gain dramatically and decrease switch voltage stresses effectively. The coupled inductor operates not only as a filter inductor of the buck-boost BDC, but also as a transformer of the DAHB converter. The input voltage of the DAHB converter is shared with the output of the buck-boost BDC. So PWM control can be adopted to the buck-boost BDC to ensure that the voltage on the two sides of the DAHB converter is always matched. As a result, the circulating current and conduction losses can be lowered to improve efficiency. Phase-shift control is adopted to the DAHB converter to regulate the power flows of the proposed BDC. Moreover, zero-voltage-switching is achieved for all of the active switches to reduce the switching losses. The operational principles and characteristics of the proposed BDC are presented in detail. The analysis and performance have been fully validated experimentally on a 40-60V/400V 1kW hardware prototype.
POWER ELECTRONICS ABSTRACT 2016-2017 STEADY-STATE ANALYSIS OF INDUCTOR CONDUCTION MODES IN THE QUADRATIC BOOST CONVERTER The conduction modes of the quadratic boost converter are explored in the context of high DC gain applications. A complete analytical description of the steady-state behavior of the converter operating in four possible inductor current discontinuous conduction modes is presented. Boundaries between modes are determined together with the corresponding transitions. The study covers the operation of the converter using a pulse width modulator (PWM) for constant switching frequency, and employing a hysteresis comparator for variable switching frequency. Both cases are analyzed for the same set of converter parameters and different constant resistive loads, while the converter is fed by a low DC voltage ranging from 20 to 30 VDC. Several simulations are used to verify the waveforms and average values predicted by the theoretical analysis. Experimental results in a 60 W prototype are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions, and efficiency measurements reveal that one of the discontinuous conduction modes can compete with the continuous conduction mode in high DC gain applications.
